PRHS C.O.R.E. Promotes "Street Smart" attempt to promote a safe, sober Prom 2015, the day prior to prom, on Friday, April 24th, the PRHS C.O.R.E. Club and Drug Free Collier proudly welcomed Stay Alive From Education (S.A.F.E.) presenters of "Street Smart," a non-profit organization dedicated to making young adults aware of the dangers of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, texting and/or emailing while driving, not wearing seat belts, and the trauma associated with these dangers. The goal of S.A.F.E. is to offer information that will allow the audience to make rational decisions concerning their safety and well-being, thus reducing injuries and fatalities, giving them the opportunity to become responsible and healthy adults. About 500 students, mainly Juniors and Seniors of PRHS attending Prom 2015, experienced the "Street Smart" program which took the students into the real-life drama experienced by firefighter/paramedics as they work to save the lives of individuals who have made poor choices when it comes to drinking or using drugs, texting and driving, and the non-compliance of seat belts. Featuring photos and descriptions of real-life trauma incidents, "Street Smart" was a no-holds-barred presentation that got the PRHS students involved and certainly left a powerful impression of the importance of responsible choices. C.O.R.E. Club, the drug free club on campus, was proud to have brought such a positive message to PRHS, especially so close to prom. For more information on “Street Smart,” please check out their site at http://safeprogram.com/distracted-driving.html .
There's always something new in PRHS C.O.R.E.! *11 Members represent PRHS C.O.R.E. at the 7th Annual Drug Free Collier Luncheon! On March 5, 2015, PRHS C.O.R.E. had the privilege of being the only high school from Collier County invited to attend the Drug-Free Collier luncheon/fundraiser at the Ritz Carlton Tiburon Naples. Our 11 student representatives from the CORE club who escorted Sheriff Rambosk, Dr. Pamela Patton, The Beasley Broadcasting Group, Naples Daily News, President Dr. Frank Nappo and the board members of Drug Free Collier, Mr. Bremseth, Mrs. Tammy Vogt, and many others from the Naples community to their seats before the luncheon began. During the luncheon, our students heard moving speeches from Nick Borders and his mother Michelle about the loss of his best friend Jordi Gudino from PRHS on Aug 13, 2012. We were proud to see Spencer Pearl, Kaci Petkovich, and Hunter Johnson there to support their friends and family. Hunter and Kaci’s grandmother, Veora Little, was the honored guest due to her work with Operation Medicine Cabinet, an initiative she began and our club has helped support. Our students also heard a motivational speech from a Renee Napier who lost her daughter Meagan as well as her daughters' best friend Lisa to a drunk driver in 2002. Eric, the driver of the other vehicle who spent 11 years in jail, also spoke to approximately 400 guests in attendance yesterday that bought many in the room to tears. The two keynote speakers are the same two that presented their story to juniors and seniors four years ago at PRHS. The PRHS C.O.R.E. Society represented PRHS and C.O.R.E. well, helping explain to donors the value of our club. *PRHS "chews" to be drug free ... campaign for pledges! PRHS students will have a chance to take the Drug Free pledge on campus this year. Similar to our "Don't be a Dum-Dum, Be a Smartie ... Agree to Be Drug Free" Campaign from last year, students on campus can take the pledge to remain drug free through the We "Chews" to be drug free campaign. Any student signing the pledge in the courtyard gets a piece of bubble gum once they choose to be drug free. *Spring season means PRHS C.O.R.E. springs into action ... attending spring sporting events to spread awareness and obtain pledges. PRHS C.O.R.E. "springs into action" at several spring sports home games. At various events, students from PRHS and other schools will have a chance to take the Drug Free pledge.. At softball and baseball, we hope to "strike out drugs;" at lacrosse, we encourage others to "pick" a drug free life; at tennis, we "serve" up a bright future by agreeing to be drug free; at track and field, we "stay on the right track" by "running the other direction" from peer pressure, and "putting" our lives above drugs and alcohol. *PRHS partakes in the "Last Night May Be Your Last Night" campaign contest hosted by Drug Free Collier. PRHS CORE is putting together a video and more to draw attention to the value of living a drug free life. *PRHS C.O.R.E. enlists a little help from our handy friends ... C.O.R.E. supports the PRHS Construction Academy by commissioning them to build cornhole sets to be used in on campus lunch competitions. PRHS construction academy is hard at work on the cornhole sets. Look forward to large competition during lunch brought to you by CORE where it's never a BORE!
